Overview

With 7.5 million overnight visitors (2018), Lisbon is one of the 20 most popular city tourism destinations in Europe. This is due to the long urban history of the Portuguese capital, which has led to a varied and touristically very attractive cityscape.

City tourism in Lisbon

The magnificent old town around the Castelo de São Jorge, the majestic architectural ensembles in Baixa Downtown- rebuilt in neoclassical style after the devastating earthquake of 1755 - as well as a wide range of cultural and leisure activities attracted 3.4 million overnight visitors from EU Europe, 1.3 million from America and 0.5 million from East Asia to the Portuguese metropolis on the Tagus in 2018. Added to this are day visitors from within Portugal and from Portugal's other resorts, as well as from cruise ships, which brought an additional 600,000 tourists into the city in 2018 alone. This makes Lisbon the second most popular cruise port in Europe, following the city of Hamburg. The Corona pandemic, however, has greatly reduced the number of visitors.
