What is The Big Challenge?
The Big Challenge is an English language contest for students between the ages of 11 and 16. It is held every year in May in schools across France, Germany and Spain. In 2009, over 590,000 students with 28,000 teachers from 5,500 schools participated in The Big Challenge. Created in France in 1999 by a group of English teachers, its main purpose is to motivate students learning languages with an educational yet fun experience.
At the request of teachers and students alike, we have developed a new internet tool: THE BIG CHALLENGE CLUB. The club enables teachers of French, Spanish, German and English to make contact, develop exchanges, plan projects and communicate with classes all over Europe … it also gives their students the opportunity to find pen pals speaking all these languages.
First and foremost, THE BIG CHALLENGE is a celebration of the English language. And no party without gifts. That's why each participant is rewarded and receives a certificate and a gift, irrespective of the results. In addition to thousands of gifts for all participants, the best students of each grade are awarded numerous additional prizes. Last but not least, the very best students on federal and on state level receive special prizes and the prestigious BIG CHALLENGE-cups.
The new DIERCKE INTERNATIONAL ATLAS supports the THE BIG CHALLENGE-contest and rewards the winners of each participating school with a copy of the atlas.
